rehabilitation is the tale of brooklyn-boy jack aiello, and his journey into vermont’s northern kingdom, and to central america’s costa rica. filled with wild animals, double-agents, and power-drunk biochemists, rehabilitation reveals the desperate measures of those who seek to gain control of the people, and the difference one person can make… especially after they’ve been bioengineered to control their adrenal glands and are no longer allowed to drink whiskey.

review by geoffrey pierce:

our hero is a disheveled toughie, a ‘smashmouth’ from brooklyn, abandoned by his mother and having suffered the untimely death of his father. his life is filled with wonderful vulnerabilities – to women, drink and distraction – and he’s a detective…or so he likes to think; he’s investigating the disappearance of the only nephew to the notorious brandis brothers, fences with brutal tactics…in his snooping, our man uncovers a group of biochemists in vermont’s northern kingdom…rehabilitation is ultimately a morality tale about ‘good intentions’ often serving hidden malice and greed, as it is a story of the imperious presence of addiction.

This book, this story, it came for me in the night. It snuck up behind me and kidnapped me. I was pretty much defenseless, having walked in with an entirely different idea about what I was in for; as was the main character of the book. That parallelism ran throughout, even while the events that were happening were nothing I would ever have conceived of contending with, but Brearton’s writing has that effect. You’re hotwalked all the way into an authentic experience of what could be an entirely strange otherworld of possible reality. Get ready.
